Fresh Ginger Beer

Our current level 3 heatwave led me to believe that Steve would require something cold and refreshing after his cycle ride home from work. Given my view of "beer bad" I decided to make some fresh ginger beer (completely non alcoholic) in order to fulfil my wifely duties. Steve seemed pleased enough (he definitely wasn't as hot and sweaty as when he first came through the door) but my feeling is that he would have still preferred a bottle of Summer Lightning.

Serves 4 thirsty people.

Ingredients
  • 200 grams ginger
  • 3 lemons
  • 4 heaped teaspoons of moscovado sugar
  • 1 litre sparkling mineral water
Method
  1. Remove the skin of the ginger and grate coarsely into a large bowl.
  2. Cut the peel of one lemon into large strips taking care to avoid the pith and add this and the juice of all three lemons into the bowl.
  3. Add the moscovado sugar and stir the mixture thoroughly taking care to remove any lumps of sugar.
  4. Then add the sparkling mineral water and stir again.
  5. Leave the liquid for half an hour for the flavours to infuse and then using a sieve (to remove the ginger and lemon peel) pour the mixture into a jug filled with ice and serve immediately.

  2. Hi Sara. I definitely recommend giving this one a go. It's great as an alternative to Coke and OJ if you have guests that are not drinking alcohol. Reena

  3. Mmm I love ginger beer but have never thought of making it myself. Looks simple enough though - and absolutely delicious!

  4. Hi Lucy. You are correct - it is really simple! It is quite different to the usual fizzy variety though it tastes much fresher and the lemon cuts through the sweetness. Enjoy! Reena

  5. This looks incredible. I've never thought about making my own ginger beer, but your recipe makes it sound so easy. I know you were trying to steer clear of alcohol, but this ginger beer looks like it would make one hell of a Dark 'n Stormy.

  6. Hi Mike. I am only against my husband drinking too much beer! I do however love the idea of your cocktail and will be trying the ginger beer with rum shortly!

    Thanks for the idea.

  7. Is it really 200g of ginger? Because that's a whole jar of minced ginger I have, and that would be a lot.

  8. Hi Anon. Yes it is 200 grams of fresh root ginger. However I weighed it prior to peeling it. I haven't tried the recipe using pre-minced ginger. You can always try using less ginger, it will just be more lemony than gingery. I'm sure it will still taste good. All the best. Reena
